Large navy blue cotton cloth, 84" x 80 1/2", meticulously hand stitched with old Japanese folk art, sashiko stitches. It is a piece of art that began as a necessity among the farmers. Cotton stitches were added to their clothes that were made out of hemp to give it softness, warmth, and strength. Old jackets, furoshiki wrapping cloths, etc. that were adorned with interesting designs created with Sashiko stitches, are popular collector’s items today.

This cloth is from the early to mid Showa period (1926-1989). There are nine panels of different geometric designs. Each panel is 22 1/4" and 22 1/4". There are no seams in this cloth and all the edges are trimmed by a sewing machine. The reverse side shows the clean finish of each thread (no nods). The work on this cloth shows care to detail and was done in a high professional level. The thickness of the cotton is medium. The condition is excellent with no stains, tears, holes and so on. The approx. size is 7' x 7' (217cm x 204.5cm). This will make a beautiful wall cover, bed cover, etc.
