The phoenix (Ho-o in Japanese) is a mythological bird known to appear in time of peace and prosperity. It symbolizes immortality, resurrection and life after death. The Japanese, at first, adopted a copy of Chinese design and developed its own version. It was later associated with the Empress and her crest of “kiri-no-mon” (paulownia leaves).
