This saddle was probably used for a procession or ceremony. The bullocks and cows were often used to pull carts on such occasions. The metalwork mounts of Shishi (lion) and peony with a crest of “kiri no mon” (crest of Japanese empress today) is on one side and “ten” (sky, universe or god) is on the other. This combination implies that the saddle might have been used for special occasions. Dimensions are 22” wide and 10 ½ “ in depth (7” plus nobs).
