Antique haidate(Echu style), samurai's thigh guard, with metal pieces and chain on stencil dyed (katazome) cotton. The metalwork is older, probably from the 17th to 18th century. This was probably remade sometimes later in the Meiji period. Dimensions are 21 1/4” wide and 21 3/4" long with ties on both sides.

A pair of Japanese lacquered iron abumi (stirrups) decorated with gold lacquer on a roiro ground. It has butterfly family crests (mon) in the center of a scrolling leaf and flower border, the interior in red lacquer.

A pair of Japanese lacquered iron abumi (stirrups) decorated with fine gold and nashiji (pear skin) lacquer on a roiro ground. The Tokugawa family crest (three aoi leaves on a circle) is on a scrolling leaf background; the interior is in a deep red lacquer. This abumi was constructed with a wooden floor within an iron framework (using wood made it lighter and better for battles). Edo period, probably from 17th-18th century. Approx. 9" high, 5 1/4" wide and 11" long.

This saddle was probably used for a procession or ceremony. The bullocks and cows were often used to pull carts on such occasions. The metalwork mounts of Shishi (lion) and peony with a crest of “kiri no mon” (crest of Japanese empress today) is on one side and “ten” (sky, universe or god) is on the other. This combination implies that the saddle might have been used for special occasions. Dimensions are 22” wide and 10 ½ “ in depth (7” plus nobs). The target shooting (Kyudo) set is of excellent quality; the woven wicker quiver with different weave patterns, the leather glove with decorated scrolling flower patterns and the notched end of the arrows are made from bone, the pointed iron tips and the shafts are bamboo, two weakened area in the string were mended, 19th century. The quiver is 37 inches long, 2 7/8 inches in diameter at the top.
