Old Japanese Tsumugi fabric, silk pongee with a dragon design, 14 1/2" x 110". There is a 4 1/2" cut half way (location of the cut is 55" from one end), damage on the edge (runs on 30" from one end) is shown in photos #1, 9, #10.

A large cloth, silk brocade, lined with cotton with ties on one side. Dimensions: 104 1/4”W x 45”L (2.65m x 1.14m). There are four 26” panels sewn together (sewing machine), each panel is decorated with a pair of phoenix birds parched on a paulownia tree in genuine gold leaves. The fabric is thick, silver brocade that appears to be taken from a Japanese woman's old obi. The liner is cotton. During the Edo period (1602-1868), there was a custom that the family of a deceased woman would donate her favorite kimono to the temple; some beautiful temple cloths were created from those wonderful fabrics. Japanese kesa, silk brocades, with the design of flying phoenix birds and hosoge flowers on navy blue/purple silk. Hosoge (housoge) are said to be mixtures of imaginary flowers that resemble lotus, palmette, pomegranate or peony. They can be seen in articles from the Nara period (710–784). Japanese silk obi, Nagoya style, dyed with the design of Chinese Empress and court attendants in the bamboo grove. It appears that this was converted to current Nagoya style obi (from kimono?). The design of this obi is unique. The wide and narrow area of this obi has different designs on both sides and all seams appear clean. Hand-woven Kasuri ramie (high quality hemp) taken from a man’s kimono with a pattern of small arrows. This type of kasuri fabric was not for common people. It was too expensive so it was only worn by wealthy merchants or the samurai class. 3 1/3" cut in the middle, 1 to 2 small hole. Meiji period (1868-1912). 13 1/8” x 111 1/4”

A Japanese silk oohi (Buddhist priest's ritual shoulder covering), deep salmon pink brocade silk with an overall design of overlapping fan shaped panels and snowflakes interspersed with daisies and Chinese bell flowers, etc; internal corners with Japanese symbols on a white ground. A section of old Chinese court robe with four-clawed dragon (mang) in dark blue satin and brocades. We had seen a similar large square with the dragon's face partially missing (four-clawed) at the Kyoto National Museum website sometimes ago. The square (pre 16th century red silk) was once converted to a samurai's ginbaori (sleeveless jacket worn over the armor) for a famous general. Circa, 19th century. 27" x 29 1/2"

A woven square taken from the front of a Chinese Emperor's robe with a front facing dragon in couched gold and a constellation symbol. Yellow (or apricot yellow) robes could only be worn by the Emperor or Empress. The color has faded and changed to this current tan color. Each Emperor's robe had twelve symbols of Imperial Authority embroidered on it in specific places.
