The theme on this fukusa (Japanese gift cover) is “Kin ki Sho ga”, four accomplishments of noblemen. For a man to be well balanced and eventually become a good leader, practicing (and become good at) of “Kin ki Sho ga” was encouraged during their leisure time; ‘Kin’ (Jp. Japanese kesa, silk brocades, with the design of flying phoenix birds and hosoge flowers on navy blue/purple silk. Hosoge (housoge) are said to be mixtures of imaginary flowers that resemble lotus, palmette, pomegranate or peony. They can be seen in articles from the Nara period (710–784). 9.5 feet long hand-painted Japanese carp banner (Koi-nobori) for Boy's Day. Here on this banner, a mighty little boy named Kintaro, is hitching a ride on a carp. Antique uchishiki, Japanese alter cloth, embroidered on silk satin with Chinese theme, “The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove”. Probably from late 18th to mid 19th century. 26 3/8" x 25" (67cm x 63 1/2cm).

Antique Japanese yogi, thickly woven cotton, trimmed and lined with dark aizome (Japanese blue dye). There is a opening in the center of the liner where the cotton wadding was taken out. Excellent condition (old but new). The accent piece (dyed in Katazome, stencil dye) on the collar and shoulder area were added (remove and wash purpose) and slightly soiled. Late Meiji to early Showa. Dimensions: 63" x 68" L

Antique Japanese “Yogi” bed comforter, hand-spun cotton with "tsutsugaki" paste resist dye in aizome, Japanese indigo dye. The design is auspicious with Sho-Chiku-Bai (pine, bamboo, plums) in roundels; the shoulder and collar areas are accented with "kasuri" cloths. Excellent condition. Cotton wadding was taken out and cleaned (but not washed). Approximately 55 1/2" wide x 74" long.

Antique Japanese Fukusa (gift cover), Kinko (Ch. Qin Gao) on a giant carp. According to old Chinese legend, only a mighty carp can climb the upstream of the Yellow River where water plunges a hundred feet, turning into a water fall. Cranes symbolize fidelity. They are known for not leaving their spouse’s side after their partner’s death. When pine needles fall, they fall as a pair and the color is evergreen. A pair of cranes under an old pine tree signifies the union of a couple. It is a perfect wedding fukusa (gift cover). The design is beautifully drawn here in Sumi-e black ink style on Shioze silk. Circa, Taisho to early Showa period, 1930-1940. Dimensions: 25 5/8" x 29"
