Japanese Yogi, Kimono Shape Futon Cover, Phoenix

The phoenix is a mythological bird known to appear during times of peace and prosperity. It symbolizes immortality, resurrection, and life after death. Its appearance is said to resemble a heron, eagle, and peacock. Here on this ‘Mingei” country art, it resembles a rooster more than anything. Unlike ‘Ho-o”, phoenix bird, hens and roosters are real and their presence creates a peaceful atomosphere in the daily country scene, as it read, "the drum for raising alarms is now covered in the deep moss, and the fowls are left undisturbed."

CONDITION: This is an old but beautiful yogi. The fabric is a thick but loosely woven cotton. This was probably stored for a long time. The cotton stuffing has been taken out, and is very clean now – we just washed it for a second time. The collar to the shoulder area is heavily discolored (especially in the collar) with some repaired and un-repaired holes. One noticeable hole on the shoulder can be pushed back to the other side when it is hung. There is an area with some black stains (see white arrows in photo). It will work well if it is to be hung in a large area with a high ceiling. Some ironing and fresh wadding (bottom and both sleeve ends) will work miracles for this piece. The center seam inside was left open when the wadding was taken. The Great piece for an antique lover!
