This is a Hina Goten (Palace) doll house for the Girl's day in Japan, also known as Hina-matsuri or Sekku. Traditionally it is the day to celebrate and honor the young girls in the family. I remember my days playing with our antique hina dolls. Unfortunately, ours were all destroyed over the years. I guess that our temptation was a little too strong to play around with these attractive removable attachments, including the swords.

The Hina house was not a very common style in many areas in Japan. In the modern days, the Hina dolls are usually placed on the steps or in the glass case to save space and the work that it involves. This big house was placed on top of the stairs in Kansai area (Kyoto, Osakam, etc.). The empress’s hair is a little messy, there are little paint scratches on the roof, and some dents (a little tear) in the gold background of Fusuma paper. These are all minor flaws when you see this beautiful old Hina Goten in your place! Circa early 1900s to 1940. The dimensions are: 23"H x 14 1/4"W x 7 1/2"D

Assembling the house is easily done and everything fits into a wood box, size of 18" x 9 3/4" x 8 1/4"D. The top cover (of the box) with the original paper is cracked in half and not in good shape. The stairs and rails are all removable.
