The design is done with "Kaioke", the shell boxes. They were used in shell matching game, a popular game played in the Edo period (1603-1868). The design that you see here is not patchwork. The silk was dyed first leaving the areas protected, then the designs were painted on later. Some needlework was added later to enhence the design. The condition of this kimono is excellent and wearable. There is no color loss, very high quality item. The measurements are 50

I have never seen this type of Hina Goten (Palace) until I found this one. No longer a spring chicken myself, I asked several people in Japan if they knew anything about this style. No one knew. We may call this a rare find. The Girls Days Hina ningyo (doll) set that I grew up with was displayed in the steps style, which still could be a common way of displaying 15 dolls as long as you can afford the space. The style of all the Hina dolls are from Heian Period (794

This is a beautiful old Japanese Shusu (lustrous Satin-weave) obi with the finest embroidery work.
Condition of the silk is excellent. It feels so soft, totally different from the newer obis. Color is a shiny deep blue. There is one seam in the center of the front and two in the back. Converted from Nagoya style obi to a flat obi of 11 1/8" wide x 80" long, all the works are done profesionally by hand. The design areas are balanced on each end of the front side this way...

Japanese chigo ningyo (doll), Kyoto doll from 1920-1940. Chigo simply
translates into a “young child” and the distinct hairstyle of this doll
is called Chigo-mage.
In the old days, there was a custom among the kuge (aristocrats) class
families to send their young boys away to temple for early training. The
dolls were made in late Edo period (1603-1868) portraying the looks of
these young boys...

This is a very high quality Kyoto Nishijin silk brocade obi, one of the best quality obi that we are currently offering. You may find the same type of designs in newer or even in old obis, but the quality of silk and the fine embroidery would not be the same. I have been always searching for the same obi after purchasing this obi in Japan. The seach is still continued. The originally white color is now aged to a beautiful creamy tan color, excellent condition...

Beautiful Black Japanese silk kimono Uchikake (Wedding Gown):
In Japan, there is a popular term that describes a very loving couple. They are called an Oshidori Couple.
It must have come from seeing pairs tagging along so closely together near ponds or lakes. Many folk tales were told in different regions associating their affections for each other.
Here is a strikingly beautiful view of an Oshidori couple, flying over a pond and plum trees in a dark background...

The fabric was probably cut out from an old kasuri futon blanket and made into Yu-age. What is Yu-age? When I purchased this beautiful wall hanger like piece (I thought), I was told that this was Yu-age, an old fashioned sounding name to me. This is a bath towel according to the Japanese dictionary. It has never been used, in case you are wondering. All the basting stitches are clean...

Through the Nanbansen trade, the Portuguese introduced two important things to the Japanese in the 17th century. They were the matchlock gun and tobacco. As the popularity of tobacco spread rapidly to all classes, there was the need for a tray or box to hold the utensils. Tobacco-bon came to be the "must have" entertainment piece in the Edo period (1614-1868). Along with the widespread use of charcoal in the mid Edo, metal and ceramic pot style ashtrays were used to keep the fire (charcoa...

The areas of plain tortoiseshell are effectively combined with intaglio relief to create a dramatic design. The gold area has a dense covering of very finely ground gold powder in lacquer - the technique is known as
fundame and creates a surface that is dull in finish. Dimensions of this lovely comb are: 3 3/4 inches x 1 1/2 inches Artist signed. This is from the Meiji period and probably dates to circa 1900.
